Types of Vehicle Policies
Vehicle insurance providers offer four major types of insurance policies to vehicle owners.
- Third Party/Liability insurance – These policies cover financial liability arising from an accident in which a third party is involved. Party – involves a person, property or vehicle. This type of insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
- Own damage/First Party Insurance – This cover provides financial coverage for expenses incurred as a result of damage or theft to the insured vehicle.
- Own damage/First Party Insurance – This cover provides financial coverage for expenses incurred as a result of damage or theft to the insured vehicle.
- Comprehensive/package Insurance – This form of coverage offers the best of both – third-party liability and self-damage cover. It is a type of policy that provides protection against third-party liability along with expenses incurred due to damage or theft of the insured vehicle of the policyholder.
Types of Vehicle Policies
Add-ons provide additional protection for your vehicle and can be a great way to avoid financial troubles in some circumstances.
Some of the standard add-ons offered by insurance companies are as follows:
- Zero dep/Nil depreciation – Nil or Nil - Depreciation cover add-on invoices and depreciated value of spare parts to be replaced during the claim. Closes the gap between. Without this add-on, the insurance provider will pay the portion depreciated value and the remaining amount will be covered by the policyholder.
- No Claim Bonus – No-claim bonus is a discount given on the premium at the time of renewal, If the policyholder has not filed any claim in the previous period. The longer a claim is not filed, the greater the discount. However, if a claim is filed, the discount is voided, and you must pay the difference. The No-Claim Bonus Protection add-on protects your No-Claim Bonus discount if a claim is filed.
- Return to Invoice – The insured declared value of your bike takes into account depreciation. With the Return to Invoice add-on, the claim amount in case of total loss of the vehicle will be the invoice value instead of the declared insured value.
- Personal accident cover for pillion – one of the standard add-ons offered by many insurance providers. There is personal accident cover for one pillion rider. In the event of injury or death of the pillion rider in an accident, this add-on covers up to the agreed amount.
- Consumables Cover – Vehicle Insurance Policies Nuts and Bolts, Engine Oil, Gearbox Oil, Brakes Does not cover the cost of replacement of consumables like oil, washer, bearings, lubricants etc. With the add-on of consumables, these expenses will be easily covered under the policy.
- Road side assistance – With this add-on, you can rest assured that if ever you face a breakdown while travelling, help is just a call away. Add-ons cover issues like dead battery, flat tyre, fuel replacement, electrical and mechanical repairs etc.
- Emergency Assistance Cover – Emergency Assistance cover allows you to drive hassle-free in any part of India. In case of an accident or breakdown, you get immediate on-site repair or towing assistance, wherever you are.
- Key Protection cover – Key replacement cover protects you free of charge in case your car keys are lost or misplaced. Allows for replacement claims. Replacement is done free of cost, where the insurance company pays the replacement charges.
- Engine and Gearbox Protection Cover – Engine and Gearbox cover covers the cost of repair of any parts of the engine and gearbox, such as nuts, bolts, screws etc. helps, and also covers the associated labour charges for repairs and replacement.
- Passenger Cover – Passenger cover in your car insurance policy protects you from any damage or injury caused to other passengers in the car during an accident. Helps keep you financially secure.
- Car Downtime Expenses - Car Downtime Expenses cover helps you reimburse any travel and other expenses incurred while your car is under repair or service at a network garage. You receive a daily allowance from the insurance company to help cover any such expenses.

These are the factors that can affect the premium
amount of your car insurance policy
- IDV of the car – IDV or the Insured Declared Value of the car is the current market value of the car after considering the depreciation amount. IDV represents the amount you can claim if your car is stolen or total damage.
- Age of the car – Newer cars have higher insurance premiums than older cars. The depreciation amount deducted from IDV is higher for older cars. As your vehicle depreciates, the policy premium reduces.
- Type of Policy – The premium amount is higher for comprehensive policies than for third-party liability-only policies, as the former offers more coverage.
- Add-on Cover – By availing an add-on cover on your car insurance policy, you get to pay a higher premium amount on the policy. With every new add-on cover, the premium price increases.
- Deductibles – Deductibles are the amounts the policyholder is committed to paying before the insurance company begins paying for repairs and damages. The higher the deductible amount, the lower the premium on your insurance.
- Claim History of the insured – If you do not make any claims on your insurance policy throughout the year, you are eligible for a no-claim bonus. If you don't make any claims for five consecutive years, you can get up to 50% off on your next car insurance renewal premium.
- Engine capacity of the car – Cars which have higher engine capacity charge a higher premium amount than cars with smaller engines.
- Other factors – Other factors that can affect the value of your insurance premium include the age of the owner, model and make of the car, city of registration etc.
No Claim Bonus
which is called No Claim Bonus. No Claim Bonus slab is The types are :-
- One claim-free year: 20% rebates
- Two consecutive claim-free years: 25% rebates
- Three consecutive claim-free years: 35% rebates
- Four consecutive claim-free years: 45% rebates
- Consecutive Five claim free years: 50% rebate
Note – NCB becomes 0% on making a claim in any policy or on transfer of ownership of the insurance policy, renew your policy within 90 days to avail the No Claim Bonus.
